Prescient Thoughts from a Renowned
Cynic, Sage and Prophet

Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic and registered Democrat.  He wrote the brief editorial comment below for the the July 26, 1920 edition Baltimore Evening Sun.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron."

~ H.L. Mencken, the Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

  1. The quotation in that first graphic is spot on!

God save us from those bleeding hearts who want so much to "help" us, the common man!

  4. Looks like he made this prescient observation during the final years of the Woodrow Wilson administration. That was about the time 'The Missus' had taken over the reins from old Woody and he was relegated to drooling and watching from the corner.

But I suppose you could say he was prescient enough to project this into the future. Especially considering the last two American Presidents.

  6. Mencken's words also fit George W. Bush and the Republicans.

    1. It depends entirely on WHICH Republicans you have in mind.

And how could say "also," when no specific individual was named ether by Mencken or myself?

And -- as the item clearly states -- Mencken was "a registered Democrat."

      Non-partisan cynicism was his speciality.
